Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister P Chidambaram have called it truce over the 2G note row and say thematter is closed but can the photo-op diffuse the larger crisis that continues to haunt the UPA?
It seems the controversy surrounding the note from the Finance Ministry is being seen as a closed chapter by the
government. It was a photo-op when P Chidambaram and Pranab Mukherjee came together to address a joint press conference.
But will the matter stop haunting the UPA?
It was meant for the camera as top 4 of Team Manmohan came together for a brief 5 mins statement. Pranab Mukherjee flanked
by his valued colleague Home Minister P Chidambaram, distanced himself from the finance ministry note on the 2G spectrum
allocation that sought to blame the Home Minister. Chidambaram too expressed happiness with it.
"Apart from the factual background, the papers contain certain inferences and interpretations which do not reflect my view.
The policy of the government in 2007-2008 was a continuation of the policies adopted in october 2003 and has been
reiterated by TRAI," said Pranab Mukherjee.
"I am happy with the statement made by my senior and distinguished colleague," said Chidamabaram.
It was a day of fast pace 2G firefighting both within the government and the Congress party - first Congress President
Sonia Gandhi held a meeting with Pranab Mukherjee, A K Antony and Ahmed Patel. Sonia's message to Pranab was clear that the
government must defend Chidambaram in Supreme Court and she asked Pranab to speak to the Law Minister and all concerned and
prepare the defence. Pranab also told Sonia that the note was not leaked out but came from the PMO on RTI request.
Meanwhile Law minister Salman Khursheed tried to pacify Chidambaram and maintained all was well.
"All is well, look for ot
