Even as Airlines");'>Kingfisher Airlines ( KFA) chairman Vijay Mallya promised yerterday (April 02, 2012) to give employees their long overdue pay cheques after government authorities unfroze its bank accounts, the airline pilots, engineers and cabin crew members wrote a letter to the management, asking for two months pay by April 3.
Mr Mallya said staff that authorities unfroze KFA's bank accounts on Sunday after the airline paid tax arrears, allowing him to resume wage payments. 'Please stand by me and strengthen my hands,' Mr Mallya urged employees.
The letter, which made the employees' disenchantment over not receiving four-month salaries evident, was sent on Monday afternoon in response to Mr Mallya's mail, stating that all employees would get their salaries by April 10.
'In the past, we have received similar e-mails assuring us that salary would be paid on a certain date. But none of the assurances have been met. The payment of salaries overdue for four months has left employees feeling cheated resulting in us not believing your mail,' the letter stated.
With some crew members staying away from work in protest, the airline cancelled five flights, two from Mumbai and three from Delhi on Monday. Officials said KFA was trying to stabilize operations as their bank accounts were unlocked after it paid Rs64 crore to tax officials. It is also trying to authorize some travel agents to sell their tickets and get the lost clientele back.
'All KFA employees have come to a point where operations have become unsafe due to the stress caused by our financial condition. The staffers have asked for two months salaries by April 3 and dues of the two other months by April 20,' A KFA spokesperson declined to comment.
