The Rs9,000 crore RP Sanjiv Goenka Group’s power flagship CESC, which serves 2.5 million consumers in the twin city of Kolkata and Howrah, will sign an agreement with the US Trade and Development Agency ( USTDA) in Delhi today (March 26, 2012), to fund a feasibility study to develop requirements for a smartgrid pilot project.
The signing of the agreement will coincide with the visit of the large US trade mission led by the US secretary of commerce, John Bryson.
Confirming the developments, Dilip Kumar Sen, executive director, distribution services of CESC, said, “The feasibility study through the USTDA financial grant will facilitate bench-marking, as also adoption of best international technologies, solutions and practices.”
CESC is extremely keen on applying smartgrid technologies to enhance the efficiency of its power distribution system. The firm has already invested heavily in deploying state-of-the-art plant and equipment, including modern telecommunication system, distribution automation and smart metering solutions, said Mr Sen.
CESC officials said the US financial grant, amounting to $618,860, will fund a feasibility study for implementation of smartgrid technologies across the CESC electricity distribution network in its licensed area. The project is a top priority for CESC and is aimed at improving efficiency and energy reliability.
Aniruddha Basu, VP, distribution services of CESC, said, “The induction of smartgrid technology will reduce downtime, optimise operations and help in providing quality power to the company’s growing number of consumers, which now exceeds 2.5 million.”
Significantly, the group is well set to invest Rs30,000-Rs35,000 crore by the end of 12th Plan period (2012-17), that is, over a period of six years.
